Formerly of the Army Intelligence Corps and a black belt jujitsu instructer, Eden now works for MI5. Her latest assignment is protecting a secret scientific study taking place in the Scottish Highlands. She doesn't know exactly what the study is and she doesn't ask - at least not until strange things starts crawling out of the walls.

A police officer decorated for coming out of a two year undercover mission with all limbs still attached and one very broken weapons smuggling ring. His reward is a transfer to MI5 and a partnership with Eden Ross (good) and banishment to the middle of nowhere to protect a scientist and her research (bad). And then the house starts changing around them - and things are moving in the walls.

She was actually one of the easiest - I hit upon the outfit I wanted for her in my second try. All the others went through at least three or four costume changes before I found the look I wanted. Luckily once I have the face and body nailed down, I can simply sketch numerous different outfits onto the same model. Hooray for dress-up dolls!

Technological genius and Reagan's older brother/partner in crime. She slips through the windows while he uses his MIT training to cut the security systems (he tried using his powers for good, but it wasn't nearly as challenging). On this job, his contacts get him in as Dr. Lawrence's aide for a double raid of the manor's treasure and the doctor's secrets.

Daughter of minor aristocrats and a cool, serious woman with a doctorate in archaeology, Gwynn was seduced by the myths and rituals that she came across during her work, becoming a renowned mythologist. When she took over her parent's manor after their demise, she began to notice the supernatural things she had studied in books emerging around her. Still it wasn't until the magic started happening right in her own fingertips that she made a number of records and send them to anyone she knew that might take her seriously. Including one Dr. Ava Lawrence...
This is a moment in time (and subsequent airship design) from a story that I may soon be turning into an RPG project. Both were longish speedpaints (a couple of hours each).

I wanted to use more saturated colours than I usually do, and bring in a narrative element. I liked the shape of the airships so much that I took the silhouette and worked it up into a full design. I was looking at a picture of a phoenix while I was painting, which had something of an influence.

Master of Crows

A (very late) Christmas gift for a lovely friend of mine who writes fantasy, among other things. She asked me to illustrate a scene from her story, "Master of Crows", describing to me a renegade sorcerer and his apprentice (and lover), relaxing in a little afterglow . And here is the result.

I put a lot more work into the fabric texture than I ever have before. It kind of turned into an exercise in painting silk and patterns, and I finally hit on a method that really worked for me (I then promptly forgot about it until I was halfway through my next piece and had to mentally kick myself in the shins). I'm definitely pleased with the textures.

The woman's pose is...wrong. I know this, and god knows I've tried to fix it. No matter how many references I dug up or canvas flips I tried, I just couldn't make it work. Any advice?

I used to have a very old, very bad double portrait of these two in my Elfwood gallery. I'm happy to say that this version is much improved! Though I suspect I will always be trying to really capture these characters on canvas/screen. This was originally intended as a website graphic, hence the blank background, but I am proud enough of the characters to display them here.

The redhead is my character Phurie, the other is Xepheria, who belongs to my friend Beckie. We've been nurturing and playing them since our early teens. They're currently a pair of badass red mages (though off duty right now, obviously).

I love painting faces more than anything anyway, but I think I'm getting better at skintones. That's always nice.
I'm really looking to improve my painting this summer and this seemed like the best place to do it. I probably won't go back and change this image, but I'd really like some critique on the composition - I know I could stand to improve there - and on anything else you guys can throw at me *grins*
Here is a close up of the face:
